Post Review
  • Swamiji Krishnananda can always be counted on to provide lucid and penetrating explanations and observations on philosophical and religious subjects. This book, a short analysis, is no exception. In this book the Swamiji extracts key passages from the Brahma Sutras and explains their relevance with other Indian philosophical traditions, the many commentators of the Brahma Sutras, and other philosophical and religious doctrines.
Fully one-third of the book is devoted to meditation as dealt in the BS. The Swamiji explains that the practice of meditation is to have the individual consciousness pervade the externality around the subject until the meditation becomes no different than an all-consuming fire, burning the externality of the world into the individual subject. In the end it is not the individual consciousness that is doing the meditation, but the Universal Consciousness.
The Swamiji discusses liberation in a beautiful metaphor taken from the Rig Veda. Here liberation occurs when the rivers flow into the ocean,
The Swamiji discusses the major commentators of the BS: Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarca, with clarity and insight. He chooses the issues from the the BS with selectivity and care and discusses them with precision.
The world is so lucky to have had the Swamiji grace its surfaces and leave behind such a treasure of wisdom!
