Kanthapura
Kanthapura
Description
From the Back of the Book

His characters emerge as flesh and blood people not just character in a myth. This juxtaposed with the lyrical language of the novel gives it classic dimensions.

Purabi Bannerjee- Patriot

A classic… acclaimed by critics and literature world over as one of the best creative works in English from India.

Hitavada

It has all the content of an ancient Indian classic, combined with a sharp, satirical wit and a clear understanding of the present…. Raja Rao is perhaps the most brilliant and certainly the most interesting writer of modern India.

Santha Rama Rao
New York Times Book Review.

About the Book

Kanthapura is an enchanting story of how the independence movement becomes a tangible reality in a tiny and secluded village in South India. It is the story of young Moorti, stormy and idealistic, and his fight against conservative forces. The novel has the flavour of an epic as it emerges through the eyes of a delightful old woman who comments with wisdom and humour, on the variety and complexity of village life.

About the Author

Raja Rao was born in Mysore in 1909 and went to Europe at the age of nineteen, researching in literature at the University of Montpellier and at the Sorbonne. He wrote and published his first stories in French and English. After living in France for a number of years, he moved to USA where he taught at the University of Austin, Texas.

His five novels- and three collections of short stories have all won wide and exceptional international acclaim. The Serpent and the Rope was selected for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award, India's highest literary honour. More recently, and coinciding with the publication of The Chessmaster and His Moves, Raja Rao was awarded the 1988 Neustadt International Prize for literature which is given every two years to outstanding world writers.

Raja Rao is not at work revising the next two volumes of the Chessmaster trilogy.

IAs a serious student and teacher of Bhagavad Gītā, Upaniṣad and Jyotiṣa I have found you have some good editions of English with sanskrit texts. Having texts of high quality with both is essential.   This has been a user friendly experience
