The Lost Meaning
Description

About the Book

The Lost Meaning (Gwache Arth) written in 1993 is an odyssey in search of the lost meaning of life during the turbulent period of nineteen eighties in the Punjab. The protagonist in this novel is a lonely figure caught unawares in the meshes of social prejudices and political manoeuvres. In his contemplative moods and moments, he realises the futility of building walls of preconceived notions and half-baked truths. Before long he comes to the conclusion that the two communities residing in the Punjab are like June’s swans - ‘still coupled and inseparable.’

About the Author

Niranjan Singh Tasneem (b.1929) is author of 27 books in Punjabi, Urdu and English including 12 novels, 10 books of literary criticism and 3 books of essays. He has translated several works into English, Hindi and Punjabi. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate classes in English for more than three decades and was Professor Emeritus from 1987- 1993 at GHG Khalsa College, Saddhar.

Among the awards and honours he has received are the Sahitya Akademi Award 1999, the Dhaliwal Award (l993), the Sarvottam Punjabi Galpkar Award and the Punjab State Shiromany Sahityakar Puraskar. He has also been Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (1998-99).
