The Bloodthirsty Simhavahana

The Bloodthirsty Simhavahana

The Bloodthirsty Simhavahana

Vivid, solid colours. Thick black lines hemming them in. Rudimentary silhouettes, and themes that are decidedly devotional. Madhubani paintings are one of the most popular forms of Indian folk art, having originally been a means for rural women to adorn the mud walls of their humble dwellings. In fact, the handmade paper canvases of modern-day Madhubani art are treated with mud and cow-dung in order to make for an authentic finish. The painting that you see on this page is one such Madhubani painting that depicts the simhavahana of Devi Durga.

It is upon the back of Her trusty lion that the Devi traverses across lokas and accomplishes what She was birthed for. Its scarlet body is ridden with miniscule black lines, the silver of its mane contrasting sharply with the same. Zoom in on the mane in order to appreciate the precise brushstrokes with which it has been finished. A gorgeous black eye and an exposed tongue resembling the bloodthirsty countenance of Kaliroopa. With its tail swishing above its back, the simha walks across an unassuming landscape under deep azure skies.
