Durga Standing On The Back Of The Simha

Durga Standing On The Back Of The Simha

Durga Standing On The Back Of The Simha

Thick black lines and solid-coloured panels make the Madhubani an instantly recognisable form of art. This folk art form from Central India originated in the hands of women who, when they had a few hours to themselves between cooking and cleaning and sewing, took to adorning the mud walls of their humble dwellings with homemade pigments. The wrathful Durga composition that you see on this page is an authentic Madhubani number - the canvas has been especially treated with cow-dung in order to replicate the original canvases on which these paintings have traditionally been made.

She is dressed in brightly coloured silks and jewels, Her ten arms raised on either side of Her in all Her ferocity. In one of those is the severed head of an adharmee, an allusion to Her Kaliroopa manifestation. She is balanced on the back of the simhavanana, Her long black braid flourishing behind Her. Zoom in on its expressive face and then on to the Devi’s with the fish nosering, and note the composure of bloodthirsty wrath on both. The basic but bright colour palette and the cheerful floral motifs of the backdrop serve to offset the wrath pouring forth from the Devi’s persona.

I’ve started receiving many of the books I’ve ordered and every single one of them (thus far) has been fantastic - both the books themselves, and the execution of the shipping. Safe to say I’ll be ordering many more books from your website :)

I received the kaftan today via FedEx. Your care in sending the order, packaging and methods, are exquisite. You have dressed my body in comfort and fashion for my constrained quarantine in the several kaftans ordered in the last 6 months. And I gifted my sister with one of the orders. So pleased to have made a connection with you.
