Lord Ganesha Shivaparivar

Lord Ganesha Shivaparivar

Lord Ganesha Shivaparivar

The caked mud walls of simple rural dwellings constitute the original canvas of traditional Madhubani painting. In their leisure, the women of rural households turned upon the blank canvases of their homes in order to fulfil their aesthetic needs. Today these works of folk art have evolved into a style that is unique and expressive, replicated on mobile canvases to be accessible to lovers of traditional Indian art everywhere. The one you see on this page is a fine example of a Madhubani painting done on a section of handmade paper.

While Lord Karttikeya is the handsomer of the two, his brother Lord Ganesha is the more widely adored for His childlike innocence and wisdom. This painting depicts Lord Shiva and His wife Devi Parvati with their son, Lord Ganesha. In keeping with the mythical themes predominating the folk art of India, this one stands out with its attention to detail and the devotion poured forth into the work by the painter.

The ashen Lord Shiva produces nada from His damru. The beauteous Devi Ganga cascades from His dense black jatae (dreadlocks). Devi Parvati is in an embroidered green saree; in Her hand She holds a lotus as pink as Her complexion. In the foreground Lord Ganesha holds the Mahabharata in one hand, a pot of laddooes in the other. Note the lifelike finish of the eyes of each of the three deities and the vibrant orange backdrop of the composition.
