This idealized Malayalee woman playing the veena not only gives visual joy but also reveals the artists well developed powers of observation, precision and notation, spontaneity and intimacy with the theme. Thus beauty is cast as a regional feminine ideal. The image of the woman with the veena is ethnic and laden with signs of tradition in attire and accessories and assumes a more overtly iconic presence. The frontal stance and demean our is heavily posed. This lady with her whites, gold and veena would have become an abstracted symbol of chastity, culture and tradition, yet, by the semi-nude upper body, the artist has relayed the female body into the realm of voyeurism.
Her posture is posed but she refrains from looking into the viewer's eyes. Her hair pulled together and loosely knotted falls on her forehead. She sits in a casual manner with her hands poised to play the stringed instrument. She wears the ethnic jewellery typical by Kerala. The artist has played up the sensuality and fullness of the woman's body as well as the tactile gloss of her costume and jewellery.
