The Princely Form Of Nrtya Ganesha

The Princely Form Of Nrtya Ganesha

The Princely Form Of Nrtya Ganesha

The ashtabhujadhari nrtya Ganesha is a sight to behold. Possessed of (‘dhari’) eight (‘ashta’) arms (‘bhuja’), He dances upon an Indian percussion instrument with green silk stretched taut over it. He has the plump body and the milk-white complexion of a divine child, the wisdom and innocence of His years pouring forth from His presence as He dances. Indeed, the beauty and personality of the baala-deva (child-deity) has been captured with perfection in this fabric-based watercolour from the holy city of Puri.

A yellow brocaded dhoti and blue angavastram. A bejewelled crown on His brow, delicate pink ears flanking His face. A trunk tattooed with hibiscus dye, lovingly done by one or both of His sisters, Devi Lakshmi and Devi Sarasvati, whose miniscule forms are to be found on either side of the petal-rimmed pedestal. With His posteriormost hands He stretches the body of a vicious snake above the moon-like halo of His head. In His anteriormost hands are the broken tusk and a ball of His favourite laddoo.

The inky blackness of the backdrop brings out the multitude of colours in this composition. The ornate pillars on either side of the dancing figure are in keeping with the architectural style of the temples of the North, the floors resembling the region’s ancient palaces. An unusual Himalayan-art style infusion in this folk art is to be found in the layered and flattened templetop, flanked by a pair of pristine mythical creatures.
