Vrindavan Cowherd Flies A Kite

Vrindavan Cowherd Flies A Kite

Vrindavan Cowherd Flies A Kite

In Indian art, the solitary charm of Lord Krishna is a rare theme. He is usually to be found in the company of the Vrindavan milkmaids (gopiyaan) who love Him, next to His beloved Radha, or herding His friends the Vrindavan cows and looking straight at the devotee. However, this minimalistic watercolour captures Him in the midst of a quintessentially Indian boyhood activity, rendering the larger-than-life Vishnuavatara to the down-to-earth cowherd youth that devotees love Him as.

The peet (golden yellow) of His flowing dhoti and the scarlet angavastram brings out the beauty of His dusky complexion. Hints of gold and pearls are to be found on His arms and ankles and neck, and a luxuriantly studded crown of gold and jewels on His head. Upon the golden earth of the tropics He motions, delicate ringlets of His black hair falling about His neck as He looks up at His kite motioning against clear, windy skies. Note how the windiness has been conveyed by the artist in the shape of the wisps of cloud along the top of the composition.
